Conversations in Calligraphy
To Mehwish, Calligraphy is a conversation with Allah—a connection she treasures and looks forward to nourishing daily. When studying a word or a letter, she visualizes its underlying anatomy, like a blueprint to guide her movements. She describes this process as cinematic, her mind constantly choreographing the interaction of hand and qalam to bring each complex detail to life.
For Mehwish, art is a sanctuary, and Calligraphy is a moment of prayer commemorated in ink. Her fascination with Quranic scripts, which began in childhood, drew her to Calligraphy, while the delicate intricacy of Tezhip reflected her appreciation for ornamentation and detail. Through these ethereal art forms, she connects with a lineage of artists who perfected them before her.
With each stroke of her qalam, Mehwish intertwines gratitude, prayer, and submission, writing Quranic Ayahs and connecting her heart to the Divine. In the refined lines of Thuluth, she finds both freedom and discipline. The script’s ability to blend creativity with structure allows her a moment to breathe, a meditative space created by the art, for the artist. Naskh, the sacred script of the Quran, holds a different kind of beauty. Its precision and grace make it a perfect medium through which she expresses her devotion, writing Surahs as a form of prayer.
Her childhood fascination with delicate details and ornamentation found its expression when her journey naturally evolved into the world of illumination art. The delicate patterns of Tezhip, like stars woven into constellations, remind her that sometimes the smallest details can hold infinite significance.
With Master Ayten Tiryaki as her esteemed mentor, Mehwish continues to enhance her skills in the sophisticated art form, honoring its rich traditions.
Despite the challenges and demands of perfecting two disciplines, Mehwish believes artistry knows no limits. Through her work, she embodies the truth that artistry requires patience and devotion—a reminder that even the most intricate patterns start with a single line.
